Final closure - Lucy

Because of her particular type of cancer, Lucy was recommended to have a mastectomy and go flat on one side, then have radiotherapy and undergo delayed breast reconstruction later, once she got over her cancer treatment.

She’d always had in the back of her mind that she would take this step, and 7 years after her mastectomy, Lucy finally underwent her DIEP flap breast reconstruction.

“I felt that having my breast reconstruction would be the final closure of my journey through breast cancer.”
— Lucy

Although I had my doubts when I was still deciding, I’m so grateful for having a great support network from my friends and families and reliable specialists. I felt overwhelmed then because all I had in my mind was to get through my treatments first. I was still hopeful for better days, and reconstruction has been lingering on at the back of my mind. I felt that having my breast reconstruction would be the final closure of my journey through breast cancer.

I don’t have to bother putting on my prosthetic breast anymore, every time I get ready for the day. I feel more confident and happy to wear my dresses. I had reservations with swimming, but now I am more confident wearing my swimsuit.

I feel normal again after 7 years of seeing myself with the scar from my mastectomy.

I have come out stronger despite all the challenges during recuperation.”
